Meet our DEL Hip-Hop Stories Instructors

Meet our DEL Hip-Hop Stories Instructors

Participants in DEL Hip-Hop Stories will explore hip-hop dance to understand that hip-hop stories come from awareness of one’s lived experiences.

In DEL’s February 4th Hip-Hop Stories course, we will ask:

What is the meaning of the cipher beyond the dance that we see, and what are the stories of the people that come to the hip-hop dance circle?

Participants will explore hip-hop dance to understand that hip-hop stories come from awareness of one’s lived experiences.

We’re thrilled to announce that Rennie Harris will be a Guest Artist instructor for this course, Zooming-in to share his hip-hop story!

To get ready for this upcoming course, check out these video introductions that share the personal stories of our instructors, Shakia Barron and Eli Kababa!

Known for bringing social dances to the concert stage and coining the term Street Dance Theater, three-time Bessie Award-winning Rennie Harris is one of the first hip-hop choreographers to set works on ballet-based companies such as Ballet Memphis, Colorado Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Philadanco, Giordano Dance Company, Lula Washington Dance Theatre, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Dallas Black Dance Theater, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and more.

We are so honored to have Rennie Harris join us!

In our 6-hour, in-person hip-hop workshop, participants will explore hip-hop dance to understand that hip-hop stories come from awareness of one’s lived experiences. We will investigate the multifaceted motivations and inspirations of hip-hop artists and contributors, including the impact of hip-hop on personal expression and performance.

The workshop includes group discussions and feedback, collaborative dance making, and lesson planning activities. Participants will leave with a variety of hip-hop inspired activities for their classroom related to personal storytelling and art making.

Enroll by February 1 to study with these accomplished artists and teachers!
