Join Dante Puleio, renowned Artistic Director and former company dancer of the Limón Dance Company, in this interactive movement-based workshop that dives into the culture and dance-making of José Limón.
Participants will be introduced to Danzas Mexicanas, a lost and recently rediscovered José Limón work comprising five short solos representing historical Mexican figures that was reconstructed by Puleio, and the Company dancers using photos, drawings, writings, and notation from Limón’s personal “Libros de Ideas,” with research and advisement by Limón Legacies, Sarah Stackhouse and Risa Steinberg. Limón performed this work in his early days as a dancer and choreographer, but with little archival footage and never having taught the work, the Company were the first to perform these fundamental and foundational solos in 2022.
Danzas Mexicanas unveils the essence of José Limón as a dance-maker and how his Mexican culture influenced his choreographic voice. The solos capture several movement motifs that were the springboard for his technique and are recognized in several of Limón’s major works.
Puleio will share this embodied dance history, along with rare film footage and hand-written dance notation journals with participants, following the same process for how the Limón Dance Company reconstructed this work. Participants will leave with resources on how to share this rich content within their own teaching environment.
Danzas Mexicanas was first performed on August 4, 1939 at Lisser Hall, Mills College, Oakland by José Limón.
Must register by Wednesday, October 16, 2024.
